The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, or MassDEP, is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. MassDEP has participated in the Exchange Network since 2003, implementing several Air, Waste, and water-quality related flows.

Previous Projects

Implementation of MassAir, a new public air-quality website, a suite of Air Quality data quality assessment tools, and the AQS data flow

Deployment of a web-based, GIS enabled application used to track Source Water Protection areas, abutting wells, and permits granted to wells in these areas. Data gathered on protection areas within this application is routed to R1 via the SWA data flow.

Linking the Exchange Network project with eDEP, MassDEP’s online reporting system. RCRA handler, FRS, and NEI air emissions inventory data flow directly from the regulated community by the use of eDEP to an enterprise database and on to EPA with minimal human intervention.

Replacement of a 20-year old legacy system that stored inventory data of over 5,000 Air Quality facilities and nearly 50,000 pieces of equipment with a new enterprise database module for Air Quality Source Registration data, making air quality emissions and engineering data readily available to all MassDEP staff. Users also have the ability to view a wide variety of reports, including the emission history for a facility, spatial analysis to show nearby facilities, and fee calculations.

Node Technology

MassDEP runs the OpenNode 2.0 on a .NET platform with an Oracle 11i back-end.
