Data Element

A data element is the smallest unit of information stored in a database. Individual pieces of data are standardized through common definitions and formats (data standards) (e.g., facility name). Examples of data elements are the facility name, DUNS number, and inspection date. Data elements are incorporated into XML data files for data exchanges.
