Overview
CGI is formally announcing the latest release of their Open Source Data Exchange Node 2.0 software to the Exchange Network community. The new features in this release represent the next evolutionary step in the ongoing investment and collaboration opportunities within the Exchange Network community around the management of Open Source software components for partners on the network. As Exchange Network partners work on finalizing their Exchange Network Grant Applications for this year’s upcoming grant cycle, we felt the new specifications would be useful planning information. If you have any questions about this information or would like some information related to using this software on upcoming grant projects, please feel free to send an email or call William LaBar at william.labar@cgi.com; 337.291.9854.
New features and support related items associated with the latest version of the software include:
- Support for Node 1.1 Specifications: In recognition that Node 2.0 adoption will occur at varying speeds across the Exchange Network community, the CGI
Open Source Node development team recognized the need to incorporate the support for Node 1.1 specifications into the existing software. This allows Node 1.1 implementations to successfully communicate with the CGI Open Source Node 2.0 product.
- Expanded Relational Database Support: The latest release of the software now includes official support for both MySQL and SQLServer database management systems (in addition to support for Oracle implementations).
- Expanded Data Source Support: Recognizing that not all partners on the network will have their source data in a common database format, CGI’s Open Source Node is being modified to allow for publishing data found in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
- Success of the Open Source Model: Open Source software is powerful because it allows multiple parties to contribute features and investment into the
software. CGI is excited to announce some of the first examples of this concept coming to fruition for the Exchange Network.
a. CGI’s Open Source Node 2.0 product is being integrated with Tetra Tech Inc's second generation, web-based Environmental Data Analysis System
(EDAS2). EDAS2 is another open source project for management, analysis, and exchange of environmental data. It is targeted at organizations that need an easy to use system for managing, analyzing, visualizing and sharing a wide range of environmental data such as Water Quality Exchange (WQX) formatted data.
b. Tetra Tech is modifying the CGI Open Source Node to include support for the integration of existing data flows into the software. Tetra Tech’s contribution to the source code includes the creation of a custom API to allow users to plug in existing data flows without having to rebuild the entire data flow when migrating to the new Node 2.0 specifications.
