Draft Workshop Agenda Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Objectives

  • Sharing between LAES, especially around data management priorities, organization, and projects
  • Discuss collective needs and opportunities in two content areas: Activity Tracking and Data Clearing/Distribution and its linkage to Activity Tracking
  • Explore interest and approach for LAE becomes a durable organizing venue to help improve collaboration on LAE data management

Note: This agenda is proposing that we have a series of very brief presentations (i.e.,"lighting rounds") to allow as much time as possible for interaction. We will take very quick questions but mostly que up questions for the group discussion time after the break.

Introductions and Context

  • Introductions
    • One person from each LAE

Part 1: Sharing Learning

Content Focus Area 1: Activity Tracking/Registries

====

Content Focus Area 2: EN role in data distribution/integration and connection to performance

  • Using the EN to Integrate Environmental Data Sets to Enhance Performance Accountability (Speaker: Nancie Imler)
  • Overview of Chesapeake STAT data viewer (Speaker: 'Nancie Imler)
  • Puget Sound Data Exchange Network (Speaker: John Tooley)
  • Columbia River Basin Overview (Speaker: Steve Rentmeester)
  • Lake St. Clair Digital Library (Speaker: Carol Miller)
  • Gulf of Maine Activity Overview (Speaker: Deb Soule)
  • Regional Data Needs (Speaker: David Tetta EPA Region 10)

Optional Content Focus Area 3 (if time allows): Organizing around data: how are we doing it and what are we learning?

This focus area could deal with how various LAE are or are not trying to get organized for the many (e.g., 10, 100, 1000)  actors around which data are organized. We would ask each LAE to very briefly describe current organization, and one key issue about how collaboration, decision making, investment, etc. is or is not working regarding data.

Focusing before the Break

Break

Part II: Shared Exploration and Planning

  • Open Discussion: What is important? What are the issues and opportunities? (20 min)
Identify cross cutting issues/opportunities and plan our remaining time together...working from the straw list proposed below. Depending how the issues of most interest cluster, we can modify the organization of the remaining time.
  • Discussion Area 1: Example - Activity Tracking as a Flow
  • Discussion Area 2: Example - Where the EN fits into broader data integration efforts
  • Discussion Area 3: Example - How could/should we collaborate to make progress on these areas (and the others we did not have time to discus)

Wrap-up and Next Steps

Workshop Objectives

Regional Consortiums

Prior to the workshop please use these wiki pages to enter background information about your LAE:
Chesapeake Bay (CBP)

Great Lakes (GL)

Gulf of Maine

Gulf of Mexico

Puget Sound

Columbia Basin

Resources

Issue Parking Lot

The following issues are on hold:

  • Concept Working Document: Beach Health and Status Information Networking
    • This may have its own momentum.
  • Relevance of the EN to LAES modeling
    • We don't have right people for this right now
  • Protocol and methodology of biological data collection
    • This is really important and a growth area but it probably needs additional and different people than we will have at the LAE Workshop. It is also the topic of the water exchange track on the previous day of the conference.
    • Columbia Basin Efforts
    • Biological side of monitoring – how is this being managed, etc.

The agenda looks pretty good. I would add one item to the agenda and that we request the active LAE's to share their "lessons learn" as they went through the process of establishing themselves. I think Puget Sound could learn from the other LAE's experiences, especially around data management.

GOMA has recently established a Data Management Advisory Committee (DMAC) to support the data management activities of the Alliance, and will have at least two representatives from the DMAC attending the workshop. We are very interested in the partnering opportunites coming out of this workshop - i.e. standards, data flows, etc.

I agree with Bruce...agenda looks good so far but it would be great for us newcomers to hear lessons learned from LAE's further along.
